The American Flag
Reading Time: 7 Minutes
In a simple vision, the Lord showed me an American flag that was symbolically humbled.
A Simple Vision
As I lay awake in bed early July 17, 2025, I asked the Father if there was anything He wanted me to see. A few seconds later with my eyes still closed I saw the American flag on a simple outdoor flagpole. There was no movement to indicate wind. The flag was not waving, but still. Then I saw the flag laying down on a rock. It was partially transparent and the first flag I saw was still standing. In other words, I was seeing two of the same flag. The second flag seemed to be representing the first one symbolically because even the fabric of the flag hung sideways like the first one instead of draping down onto the rock. I waited for more but that was all I saw.
My Love for the USA
I haven’t taken my US citizenship for granted. My parents were American missionaries to the beautiful country of Paraguay for 38 years and that is where I was born. I love Paraguay very much, but there was always something special about the US that pulled on my heartstrings. When we sang the national anthem I often got a big lump in my throat, and I still do. I love the USA!
My Interpretation of This Vision
The Wave
Oh say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave… o’re the land of the free and the home of the brave! When the wind blows lifting our beautiful flag, it seems to wave proudly. It gestures to all that we are “One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all!”
The flag was not waving in this vision, but at least it was standing. That gives me great comfort. I believe God is saying that even in difficult seasons we can stand as a nation if we remain humble before God .
The Rock
The rock in this vision reminds me of the people of Israel when they were in the wilderness. God rescued them from slavery in Egypt and was taking them on a journey that would ultimately lead them to their Promised Land. They had been so used to the cruel whip of the Egyptians that they didn’t believe in the mercy and generosity of their Heavenly Father.
When they ran out of water and got tired of the bread God provided, they despaired and complained bitterly to Moses. Even in their rebellion, God made a way because Moses kept praying to God on behalf of the nation. God sent quail and caused water to pour out from a big rock bringing life to the multitudes!
All of them ate the same spiritual food, and all of them drank the same spiritual water. For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:3-4 NLT
Sadly, the people that did not trust God never got to enter the Land God had promised them. The Israelites were free in body from physical slavery, but most of them were bitter slaves at heart. God wanted to set them free by teaching them to depend upon His unfailing love!
The Lord wants to set the hearts of Americans free as well, but not just so we can prosper financially. He doesn’t want us to be lazy either, of course. Our God wants us to work for Him with hearts motivated by His love for others. That is how we lay up for ourselves treasures in Heaven! (Matthew 6:19-21) His yoke is easy and His burden is light! (Matthew 11:28-30)
Humility
America is a prosperous nation and God is the reason we have been so blessed. But America allowed the enemy to gain spiritual territory over the span of many decades. The love of money has caused all kinds of sin to take root and we are seeing the bad fruit emerging in our nation. (1 Timothy 6:10) Pride caused America to rebel against God’s commands and to lean on our own “intelligence.” (Proverbs 3:5) The result was the destruction of many precious lives and has nearly cost us our nation.
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people. Proverbs 14:34 NIV
Many in America are repenting of sin and turning to God. I pray that we, the people of America, will continue to humble ourselves now rather than wait for the discipline of the Lord. The Father disciplines those He loves. (Hebrews 12:5-6) We must continue seeking the Lord, not only during difficult times, but every day– even in times of prosperity. God wants our hearts. We must know Him intimately and to obey Him without question or compromise. Without His loving guidance this nation will not stand.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV
America cannot stand strong unless we fall upon the Rock, Jesus Christ, every day of our lives. God alone can bring us into a place of unity through the truth of His Word and the power of His Spirit.
But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” Matthew 12:25 NKJV
America’s Pride Must Remain in God
This nation was founded upon Christian principles. “In God we trust.” America has been a light to the world, spreading the Gospel of Jesus freely since the beginning. Our pride has been in the Lord Jesus Christ. He has sustained us and given us divine power to shine for Him. Our love for the Savior is the reason this nation has prospered. The Lord is why we get a lump in our throat when we sing God Bless America!
Fall Upon the Rock
Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the Scriptures, ‘A stone which the builders rejected, this has become the chief cornerstone; This came about from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’ Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruit. And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and on whomever it falls, it will crush him.” Matthew 21:42-44 NASB
It is time again for America to bear good fruit by the power of the Holy Spirit, but we cannot bear fruit without water. Jesus is the Rock that gives us Living Water. He is our Source of Life– individually and as a nation. Let us trust the Lord and linger in the Tent of Meeting like Joshua– desiring to be with Him and follow Him closely (Exodus 33:11).
Dear Father, we fall upon Your Son, Jesus! Transform our selfish hearts of stone into hearts of flesh– full of Your righteousness, mercy and compassion for others. May America drink of You, Jesus, and produce the good fruit of Your righteous Kingdom like never before! And may the American flag wave once again in praise, unashamedly declaring, “In God we trust!” Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, amen.
No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 NLT
